From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Monty South Community,
As I mentioned in the last newsletter preparations for 2020 are progressing steadily. The 2020 Classes have been formed and we are now checking against the teaching staff recommendations.
Again, a reminder that ‘Step Up to the Next Class’ will take place on four sessions, on Thursday 5 December, Friday 6 December, Monday 9 December with the final session being held all day on Tuesday 10 December.
For the 2020 school year there will be a couple of changes. As you are aware, Lucy Skipper and Jenny Farrelly, will be taking family leave. Jenny will come back at the start of the school year for a couple of weeks and then will be on leave.
Tom Norris will also be leaving us and moving to the Northern Territory, where his wife and son have been living for the past few months. Tom’s wife has a placement at an aboriginal community and Tom will be joining her for the whole of next year and possibly longer. At this stage, he is taking 12 months leave.
Chris Cameron is also taking a combination of Long Service Leave and leave for 12 months while he pursues other business interests. He will be making himself available for casual relief teaching (CRT) so it won’t be a complete goodbye.
Tom Davis will not be returning to us next year, as he has been appointed to Mernda Park Primary School for 12 months but Eliza Crellin will be back with us after her 12 months leave, full of renewed energy and passion.
Melanie Townson will be back four days a week and later in the year, Emma Hooper and Rosie Morton are due to return from Family Leave.
Unfortunately, we will be saying goodbye to Rowena Martin as her positon was held against Melanie Townson and with Mel returning we do not have a vacancy. For the first time in 10 years, our school numbers will remain relatively the same and not grow.
Whilst I am focused on staff, I thought I should mention, for those who may remember, Neil Whitehead. Neil has resigned from the Department of Education in Victoria as he is teaching up near Yeppoon and hopes to remain there for a few more years. He is actually quite close to the bushfires raging in Queensland and NSW. He is safe at the moment but it is affecting his community and I am sure you will join me in sending positive thoughts to him, his family and his community in this awful time.
Mobile phone policy
As you may be aware, the Victorian government has announced a new mobile phone policy that will require students to switch their phones off and securely store them away during the school day from Term 1, 2020. Thus, when emergencies occur, parents or carers should reach their child by calling the school office.
The policy is designed to support teaching and learning in an environment that is free from unnecessary distractions, disruptions and student inattention caused by the urge to check phones. While it is more targeted at secondary students, it is becoming more and more relevant to primary school students, particularly in the senior levels.
We do have a mobile phone policy in place currently but the school is working on changes that will implement the Government’s announcement and one that also reflects the needs of our own community. As such, we will be undertaking consultation with students, staff, School Council and families to ensure our approach to implementing this policy meets the needs of our whole community. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the new policy, please don’t hesitate to contact me at school on 9439 6201. Please note, the policy does outline some exceptions to this policy if certain conditions are met and that is where we will be consulting with the school community.

It is that time of the year when we begin to plan for the Prep transition sessions.
This year the transition sessions are as follows:
- Friday 15 November – 9-11.30am
- Friday 22 November – 9-11.30am
- Friday 29 November – 9-11.30am
A traditional highlight in the lead up to Christmas is the Monty South Christmas Carols evening. It has been a noted event in the local community for around 45 years and even though we broke with tradition last year, I am thrilled to announce it is it is back again!
This year we are holding it on Tuesday 3 December at 6.30pm on the school oval.
This is an opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate the spirit of Christmas before the end of the school year. More details will follow in the newsfeed.
Learning and teaching programs vary across schools based on local needs and circumstances and reflect each school’s priorities, decisions and resources. This in turn, informs the parent payment charges approved by school councils that may vary from one school to the next.
Last night our School Council approved the Parent Payment charges for the 2020 school year. These charges are set to ensure that parent payment practices are consistent, transparent and provide all students with access to the curriculum. School Council is responsible for developing and approving school-level parent payment charges and can request payments from parents under three categories: Essential Student Learning Items, Essential Curriculum Materials (book packs) and Voluntary Financial Contributions.
Parent contribution, in all forms, assists schools to provide an enriched learning and teaching program for every student and is highly valued by school communities.
I wish to thank our Finance committee, Vanessa Edwards (Treasurer), Adam Bird (President), Paula Hogan (Business Manager) and myself, who have worked hard to ensure that the Essential Student Learning charge remains at the same level as the previous year. Information regarding these charges and when/how to pay will be distributed via Compass, as soon as the teachers finalise their level book packs.
We thank our families in advance for your financial support, which enables us to continue to ‘add value’ to the students of MSPS.
Thank you to our wonderful fete committee for all their hard work in organising the fete which will happen on Sunday March 15 2020. They have hired a number of amusements for the day, such as the Bounz Alot Jumping Castle for the older students, an Obstacle XL Challenge Run, a Zorb Trac, a jumping castle for the 3- 8 year olds, a wall climb (3-14 year olds), an inflatable slide (3 years and older), a bungee run (all ages), two face painters and lots of other stalls and attractions including a ‘Dunk Dale’ machine. We are really looking forward to it.
This week began on a high note, with our MSPS Choir singing three numbers at the Eltham Festival. Thanks to Emily Kilkenny (Performing arts) for leading, teaching and conducting this talented group. Thank you also to our community who came to support. It was lovely to see so many of you there.
Thumbs up to our MSPS Chess team who participated in the Northern Star Chess primary open super final on Monday. The three person team consisting of Eamon Heley, Rowan Loveland and Gabriel Tran came in 13th in a field of 49 schools. This is a wonderful result and we are extremely proud of the boys.
Thumbs up to Alex Lloyd, who competed at the recent state athletics meet for Victorian Primary school students and won a bronze medal for high jump. Congratulations Alex, not only for your continuing high results but also for your quiet but determined demeanour and your good sportsmanship.
Congratulations also to:
Asher Elsen, Annalies Veldman, Zahli Jimeno, Telulah Twohig, Leni McDonald, Alexandra Parry, Karmen Apperly, Yuriko Johnstone and Lily Cameron who were selected as finalists in the Montmorency Secondary College art competition. To have so many finalists is truly outstanding and Yuri and Zahli were awarded 2nd and 3rd place respectively. We are so proud of the students and their efforts. So awesome to have such talent at our school.
Finally thumbs up to Jiah Jimeno, Gideon and Gabriel Tran who were all awarded certificates in the Maths Talent Quest competition run by Mathematical Association of Victoria. This attracts many entries across the state and it is really an accolade to win an award. Well done!

A concert for Keyboard students will be held Wednesday 20th November in the gymnasium commencing 3.00 until approximately 4.30pm.
Students are encouraged to play and we hope parents and friends can make it to see them perform.
Library borrowing for this year will finish on Friday the 29th of November. As from now our students will no longer be bringing books home but will leave them in their book boxes for their Daily 5.
All books are to be returned to the library NO LATER than Friday the 6th of December. If any student still has a book at home could they please be returned back to school to be put in their book box.
It is such a big job getting all our books returned to the library at the end of each year so I would be very grateful for your assistance in this. We want to start 2020 with a clean slate.
Please don’t hesitate to email me if there are any concerns with lost books.

Schoolastic book club
The final issue for the year (Issue 8) is now available and it contains many wonderful books which would make great Christmas gifts. Given that the end of the school year is fast approaching there is only 1 week to select your order.
All orders are to be placed online via the LOOP. The books will take approximately two weeks to arrive at school after the closed due date of 19th November.
Each order helps earn free books for our school, however there is never any obligation to buy.
If you are buying books for your child as a present, please email me on email@example.com if you would like me to hold them temporarily in my office for you. If I am not advised, when the books come in they will go straight to your child’s classroom.

Second Hand Uniform Sale – Friday November 15
The P&F are running a second-hand uniform sale on Friday 15 Nov from 8:30-9:30am outside the gym.
Second-hand uniforms needed! Donations of clean, used uniforms needed to restock after the building move. Please leave at the front office up until the day of the sale. All funds raised go towards projects at the school.
Working Bee – Sunday, November 17
With the completion of the main works to the school ground complete, we can now look at many maintenance requirements for the rest of the school grounds.
Please join the Environment and Facilities Committee at the only working bee for 2019.
We have a list of jobs that need doing around the school grounds. This includes weeding, painting/re-staining woodwork, sweeping/leaf blowing, whipper-snipping and spreading pine-bark to name a few tasks.
One very important and skilled job is paving. We have terracotta brick pavers that we would love to lay around areas of the school but we need skilled help for this job. If you are able to do so please let us know. This job will require some planning prior to the working bee.
Please bring any tools required for the above jobs and your gloves and we'll get stuck into it for three hours followed by a BBQ.

Christmas raffle and free dress day
Parents & Friends would like to invite all Monty South students to join in our Free Dress Day on Friday 22nd November.
We would love to see you add some Christmas cheer to start your Christmas celebrations!
Please bring a donation to add to our wonderful Christmas hampers and assist in our fund-raising raffle.
Your donation of scratchy tickets (or gold coins), vouchers, wines, chocolates, bon bons, nuts and other Christmas delicacies can either be placed in the box provided outside the office or Parents & Friends will collect items Friday morning from the classrooms (please note we cannot accept out of date products).
A book of 10 raffle tickets will soon be distributed for families to sell.
Tickets are $1 each for entry into our raffle. You could win one of the many gourmet Christmas Food Hampers to be drawn at our Christmas Carols on Tuesday 3rdDecember 2019.
Please return all completed raffle ticket butts together with money collected by Wednesday 27th November.

Colour fun run – Friday December 13
This year Montmorency South Primary School Colour Explosion Run is being held on Friday 13th December. A consent form for participation on the day will be posted shortly.
The fundraising kicked off three weeks ago and will run until 18th November…..yes one more week to go for fundraising efforts!!!
Students should have received a Sponsorship Form and it is encouraged each student to fundraise at least $10 to participate in the Colour Explosion Event…..but why not aim higher!!! The more money we raise the more we can provide back to the students by improving the playground facilities.

If you have used the Sponsorship Forms, please hand these into the school by Monday 18th November, along with the monies fundraised and chosen prize/s. This is to ensure prizes are provided to student prior to end of school year.
Exciting news! The MSPS Fete is happening! It will be here at the school on Sunday March 15th 2020 – put it in your calendars now! This will be the biggest event our school has held in a decade.
The aim is to bring the school community and local community together, showcase our amazing new facilities, and make sure everyone has fun! The Fete will include rides, live music, multicultural foods, games, entertainment, dunk tank and much more. Here’s the best bit: every single class will be involved on the day.
We are also excited to make this event as sustainable as possible – and our first project is to sew a whopping 500 reusable bags in collaboration with Boomerang Bags for visitors to buy and decorate on the day. The material kits are ready to be sewed, you can pick them up from school foyer. Upon completion, please return to the school office.
There are many ways that you can take part in the Fete – if you have a specific idea that will utilise your skills, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
